How to Stay Motivated When Eating Healthy

We all set nutritional goals with the intention to change our lives for the better, but what happens when the motivation to continue said goals fizzles out? Unfortunately, when this happens, most people give up but we’re providing you a few tips on how to stay true to your healthy eating commitment even when you lack the motivation.

Start small.

Don’t think that in just one day you will completely change all of your eating habits. Start incorporating healthy tendencies one step at a time. Gradually drink more water, eat more fruits and vegetables, and eat only when you are truly hungry. These are small steps that have a positive impact on your body. Slow and steady is the best way to create a consistent, maintainable healthy lifestyle.

Make it a habit.

Another key to a healthy diet is consistency. Commit to something for 30 days (or another set amount of time) and after that, your newfound food choices will come naturally to you. Even if you are not motivated to improve your eating habits, remember that you made a commitment to yourself, and soon these habits will become second nature.

Know your why.

Ask yourself why you want to eat healthier. Is it because you want to lose weight so you can play with your kids without getting winded? Is it to lower your cholesterol? Is it just because you want to take care of the one body that you will have for the rest of your life? Whatever the reason is, when you don’t feel motivated to make healthy choices, remember why you chose to change your lifestyle in the first place. Usually, this gentle reminder is all you will need to get back on track.

Eat intentionally.

Ask yourself a few questions before you eat. Am I hungry or just bored? How will I feel after eating this? Is this adding the nutrients I need to my body? This isn’t intended to restrict you from foods you enjoy, but it helps you choose foods that are nourishing your body even when you aren’t motivated to eat healthy. Asking these questions and being intentional with your eating decisions will help you make the right food choices when you would normally choose to eat junk food.
