How to Stay Healthy on Vacation

More often than not, we throw our healthy habits out of the window when we go on vacation. We think it’s the perfect time to “cheat” on our diets, skip our workouts, and not worry about our overall well being. Know that it doesn’t have to be this way. If you are vacationing this summer, here are a few ways you can continue your healthy habits while you are away from your normal day-to-day routine.

Move your body.

Don’t forget to move your body while on vacation! Although you may spend the majority of your vacation days soaking up the sun on the beach, make time for some sort of activity each day. Whether you lift weights at the local gym, run on the beach, bike around town or simply walk a few miles, incorporating movement into your vacation days is a great way to continue healthy habits even when you are away from your normal routine.

Eat fresh foods.

Although many people tend to splurge while traveling, the best way to stay healthy while on vacation is to eat fresh whole foods. We suggest packing healthy foods and snacks for the trip and researching great local eateries with healthy choices. We encourage you to think outside of the box on ways you can explore your vacation destination while enjoying fresh foods. For example, check out local farmers’ markets or visit a local grocery store and picnic at a local park, beach, or landmark.

Drink enough water.

Prioritize water, especially if you are spending your days in the sun this summer. Many people drink alcoholic beverages while on vacation, and this makes consuming an appropriate amount of water even more important. If it helps you remember, bring a refillable water bottle with you on vacation so that you always have water handy.

Get enough sleep.

Our sleep routine is easily thrown off when we are no longer on our normal schedule, sleeping in an unusual bed, and spending our evenings in a different room than we are used to, but sleep is so important. Prioritize a good night’s sleep while on your getaway so you don’t feel like you need a vacation from your vacation once you return home.

Keeping up healthy habits while on vacation allows us to seamlessly transition back to our everyday activities once the trip is over.
